Royal Oaks Partners With the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research

Here at Royal Oaks, we recognize that health and well-being are about more than just physical health. That’s why we take a holistic approach that nurtures the mind, body and spirit. We also recognize the important role that technology has to play in healthy aging, which is why we are proud to announce an innovative research partnership with the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Dedicated to Finding a Cure Through Research

Parkinson's disease affects nearly 1 million Americans and more than 6 million people worldwide. It's a progressive disease that occurs when the brain stops making enough dopamine. Symptoms vary but can include tremors, stiffness, balance problems, depression and memory issues.

The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research was founded in 2000 by the Hollywood actor who was diagnosed with the disease in 1991. The foundation's mission is to improve the lives of people living with Parkinson’s disease by advancing treatment options and, one day, finding a cure. It’s the world's largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson's drug development and has raised over $1.75 billion toward research.

A Landmark Study

Launched by the Michael J. Fox Foundation in 2010, the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) is a groundbreaking study that is changing the way scientists think about the brain. The data gathered from volunteers is helping scientists find new ways to diagnose, treat and prevent brain disease.

One aspect of the study focuses on smell loss as an early indicator of brain disease. PPMI is asking people without Parkinson’s disease to take a scratch-and-sniff test to better understand how smell loss can be used to identify the early stages of brain disease.

Get Involved and Get Ahead of Potential Health Risks

To support this life-changing research, Royal Oaks will encourage its residents, their families and local community members to participate by taking a simple scratch-and-sniff test. The data gathered from the test will contribute to this crucial study and help act as a preventative measure against Parkinson’s. If you're interested in participating in the smell test, you can register here.

The test is only available to people without Parkinson’s disease, aged 60 and above, and living in the United States or Canada. People who are not eligible for this test may still be able to help with the study. More details are available on the Foundation’s website.
