Years ago, Karen Slater learned about Quilts of Valor and she was so moved she started her own movement using the hobby near and dear to her heart–quilting.
Quilts of Valor is a non-profit foundation whose goal is to cover physically or psychologically wounded servicemembers with a freedom quilt, honoring them for their sacrifices. The movement was originally started by Catherine Roberts of Seaford, DE in 2003 but has now spread across the United States and even has an international presence.
Karen, an avid quilter, began her quest to contribute to the cause. Between 2010 and 2016 she made 35 twin-sized quilts for veterans at the Veterans Home in Warrensville, MO, “The Royal Oaks of veterans homes,” Karen said with a laugh. Her father eventually moved there so the passion became personal.
Since November of 2016, Karen’s purpose to honor veterans has resulted in 37 mini-quilts for residents at Royal Oaks and she will be the guest of honor at our Veteran’s Day celebration tomorrow. We salute Karen and the many servicemen and women on our campus and throughout the country on this special day.
